Overview of Egypt
Egypt covers 1,001,449 square kilometres in northeastern Africa, where the Nile River has supported continuous civilisation for over five millennia. With a population of approximately 109 million, it is the most populous country in the Arab world. The country holds six UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the Memphis and its Necropolis, the ancient Theban region, and Abu Simbel.
Cairo is the entry point and a destination in its own right. The Egyptian Museum holds the world's largest collection of pharaonic antiquities, including the treasures of Tutankhamun's tomb. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Islamic Cairo has operated continuously since the 14th century. Aswan, 900 kilometres south along the Nile, is the most relaxed city on the river: its Philae Temple, Nubian villages, and the Aswan High Dam make it the natural base for the south.
Abu Simbel sits 280 kilometres south of Aswan on Lake Nasser, cut from solid rock by Ramesses II in the 13th century BCE and relocated in the 1960s. Its twice-yearly solar alignment remains one of the most extraordinary engineering achievements of the ancient world. Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast holds the ruins of the ancient Bibliotheca, the Qaitbay Citadel, and a Greek and Roman character entirely different from the Nile Valley.
All international arrivals land at Cairo International Airport. Aswan has its own airport, reachable in 1.5 hours by domestic flight from Cairo. Abu Simbel is a 45-minute flight from Aswan or a 3-hour drive. Alexandria is 2.5 hours northwest of Cairo by road or rail. Best Time to Visit Egypt
Egypt has a hot desert climate with extreme summer heat inland. October through April is the prime window for Nile travel, the Pyramids, and the southern temples — the south closes quickly in the heat as May approaches.
October – February
Peak Season: Nile and Pyramids
October through February is Egypt's finest window. Cairo sits between 14 and 26°C, the Giza Plateau is comfortable through the middle of the day, and Nile cruise conditions from Luxor to Aswan are at their best with blue skies and mild temperatures rarely exceeding 26°C. Abu Simbel in this window is clear and cool before dawn. December is peak season: book all Nile cruises and Aswan properties at least four months ahead.

March – April
Shoulder Season: Last Comfortable Window
March and April offer Egypt's most flexible shoulder window. Crowds thin after the February peak, temperatures in Cairo and Alexandria remain manageable, and Aswan and Abu Simbel are still accessible before the southern heat becomes punishing in May. The khamaseen hot desert winds can bring sand haze in April but rarely affect planned visits. This is the most cost-effective window for a full north-to-south Egypt itinerary.

May – September
Summer: Alexandria and Abu Simbel Solar Alignment
May through September brings extreme heat to Aswan and Upper Egypt: daytime temperatures exceed 40°C in July and August. Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast is the exception: cooled by sea breezes and running between 22 and 27°C through summer, it is a viable destination when the south is closed. Abu Simbel's second solar alignment falls on 22 October. Summer is also when the ancient sites are least crowded: early morning visits to the Pyramids before 7 am remain manageable.

Abu Simbel: Plan Around the Solar Event
Abu Simbel is worth organising an entire itinerary around its solar alignment dates: 22 February and 22 October, when sunlight enters the inner sanctuary and illuminates the statues of Ramesses II and the gods for exactly 20 minutes. Outside these dates it remains one of the most remarkable sites in Egypt at any time of year. The convoy departs Aswan at 3 am to reach the temple at dawn.
