Flåm connects by fjord ferry to Balestrand on the Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord at 204 kilometres and 1,308 metres depth, where artists and travellers have gathered since the late 19th century.
Bergen, Norway's second city and UNESCO World Heritage wharf town, faces its medieval Bryggen buildings across the fish market harbour. The Fløibanen funicular climbs 320 metres to Mount Fløyen in eight minutes for panoramic fjord views. Best Time to Visit Norway
Norway offers two entirely different seasonal experiences: the midnight sun and fjord travel in summer, and the Northern Lights in winter. The fjord corridor from Oslo to Bergen is best June through September. Northern Lights require October through March.
June – August
Summer: Midnight Sun and Fjord Season
June through August is Norway's prime fjord season. The Flåm Railway, Sognefjord ferry crossings, and Balestrand kayaking run at full schedule, with temperatures in Oslo and Bergen between 18 and 23°C and over 20 hours of daylight in June. Midsommar bonfires on 23 June are one of Scandinavia's most atmospheric events. Book the Flåm Railway and Bergen accommodation at least three months ahead for July.

September – October
Early Autumn: Shoulder Season and First Auroras
September is Norway's finest shoulder month. Summer crowds clear, the fjords remain navigable, and the first Northern Lights appear from late September as nights lengthen. Foliage across the fjord valley walls turns amber through October, and hotels across the corridor sit well below the July peak.

November – February
Winter: Northern Lights Peak Season
November through February is the Northern Lights' peak window. The aurora borealis is visible from October through March but strongest in deep winter, with Tromsø five hours north of Bergen by air serving as the premier base. Oslo and Bergen are quiet and atmospheric, with Bergen's fish market running year-round and Bryggen in snow at its most striking.

April – May
Spring: Waterfalls in Full Flow
April and May are Norway's most dramatic months for waterfalls. Snowmelt pushes the Kjosfossen and Rjoandefossen on the Flåm Railway to their greatest volume, and the observatory stop at Kjosfossen in May is one of the most photographed moments in Norwegian travel. The Sognefjord is navigable, Balestrand blooms through May, and hotels sit at shoulder-season pricing.
